By Anonymous JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The cure for diabetes may come a little sooner, or at least, that’s what one company’s employees are hoping.
A Haskell Company team of employees raised $1,600 in pledges for the Nov. 15 “America’s Walk for Diabetes,” which raised funds to find a cure for the ailment that kills more people annually than AIDS and breast cancer combined.
The two-mile walk, which was held at the Jacksonville Zoo, allowed employees to enjoy the sites of the zoo while raising money for a worthy cause, Haskell team leader David Kode said.
“I gladly participated in the walk, knowing my time and efforts would greatly benefit a large group of individuals with this disease,” he said.
A large group, indeed.
In the United States alone, 17 million people have diabetes –a number that has grown by 49 percent between 1990 and 2000, according to the American Diabetes Association.
Kode said he’d like to give special thanks to team members Bill Skelley, Rebecca Hulen, Lu Ann Humphries, Jess Simmons and Brian Tellier for their hard work.
