By Anonymous August 23, 2004 -- Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY is proud to announce the formation of two new diabetes support groups, which will meet the second Tuesday of each month in the hospital’s boardroom, beginning September 14, 2004. The support group sessions will be offered in both morning and evening sessions will be open to anyone with diabetes from all surrounding communities. The support groups are provided by Good Samaritan Hospital free of charge, as a community service.
“As a whole, according to the American Diabetes Association, there are approximately 18.2 million people in the United States that suffer from diabetes, and consequently, diabetes is one of the leading diagnoses here at Good Samaritan,” noted Kathleen Hay, Director of Nursing for Good Samaritan Hospital. “While it may not be the leading cause for a hospital visit or inpatient admittance, the numbers do reflect that it is a widespread disease that deserves a good deal of both medical attention and support. Our goal in forming the diabetes support group is not only to provide support and to raise awareness, but more importantly, to help those people who have diabetes to live healthy lives on a daily basis with their disease,” concluded Hay.
The first session, on September 14, will feature an overview of the disease, and discuss why a support group is needed and the benefits that participants will derive from their participation.
The October 12 meeting will recognize National Diabetes Awareness Month with a special presentation from a nationally-recognized authority on diabetes.
Seating is limited for each session and registration is required. To better accommodate the community’s needs, Good Samaritan will offer two programs, at both 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM. For more information or to register please call 1-800-HELP-IN-5.
