By Anonymous Dallas, Texas October 8, 2003 – Diabetech, LP announced today that the company’s founders will deliver a Poster Presentation at the Diabetes Technology Meeting in San Francisco, California on November 6-7, 2003 entitled: “A Wireless-enabled Proactive Diabetes Management System”. In addition, a summary report will be published and available for review at the meeting.
Stephen Ponder, MD CDE, affiliated with Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, was a co-author of the study which began in late 2002. The focus of the research was to determine the feasibility of a real-time diabetes information management system as a clinical tool. Key differentiators of this original research were the technology deployed and the methods used to gain insight into a patient’s relative disease state, automatically, and without cumbersome intermediary technologies getting in the way of access to critical patient data.
“Through the use of these wireless devices for polling the glucose meter and the automatic transmission of this data to my preferred wireless device, I was able to monitor patients at home and around town easier and at less cost than without this new technology” said Dr. Ponder. “Furthermore, there was no fax machine, personal computer or Internet connection required by my patients for monitoring to occur. This system allowed my team to identify emerging trends and to exercise proactive management with minimal deviation from their existing routine”. In addition, families expressed a high degree of satisfaction related to the medical team’s proactive advice. Diabetes education became an unexpected use of the trial system as it provided a much-enhanced platform from which to deliver insightful self-test glucose analysis training.
The study proved that it is possible to achieve superior outcomes through simplifying the sharing of diabetes data. Specific events witnessed during the study suggest that a remote monitoring system for tracking disease state and compliance may contribute to an overall reduction in healthcare expenditures, especially during chronic events through its use as a mobile remote monitoring system and as a telemedicine-style educational platform.
